Brickermod: Hearts Cube, White Body

Brickermod Hearts Cube
Brickermod Hearts Cube

Initial build: 2023-08-21

The 1×1 Heart Tile is a funny element. For a Brickermod, the hearts can be arranged as a group of four on a Cubie Face.

The tiles are available in only nine colors. For a start, I chose a White Body, and selected six colors that make the best match against the White Body and each other.

Brickermod: Non-Void Void Cube

Brickermod Void Cube
Left: Void Cube - Right: Brickermod Non-Void Void Cube

Initial build: 2023-07-12

This is another simple case of "Brickermod": Eight colored 2x2 Tiles around a black Center Tile on each face of a Black Body FanXin FX7780.

The obvious challenge with a Void Cube is the mechanical build without a central core. However, there is a hidden challenge to get the Void Cube solved. Without center colors, there is no reference how to arrange the edge and corner cubes around the core. But without reference, only 50% of the cases are solvable. This is called "Void Cube Parity".

There is a suggestion how to simulate a Void Cube: Remove the center caps of a regular cube. This works good with stickered cubes, but with most stickerless cubes, the center colors are still visible underneath the center caps. The Brickermod is an elegant way to create a Void Cube in terms of puzzle challenge. With the black tiles attached, the cube feels just like a regular cube, without the danger of breaking your fingers when getting trapped in the void..

Brickermod Rounded Void Cube

Initial build: 2023-07-19

There is an alternative "Rounded" Void Cube available. The special look can also be implemented as "Brickermod". The biggest challenge is to get matching 1×2 Square and 2×2 "Macaroni" Tiles for the face outlines. For the Brickermod shown here, I had to cheat a little by using an approriate orientation, because the blue color tone of the tiles does not match properly.

The parts list below is mainly to show the amount of different tiles. You can use any six colors, so the list only names Color 1 to Color 6 instead of giving specific color names.

Brickermod: Non-Fishered Fisher Cube

Brickermod Non-Fishered Fisher Cube
Left: Candy Fisher Cube - Right: Brickermod Non-Fishered Fisher Cube

Initial build: 2023-07-29

The Fisher Cube is a Classic shapemod. However, the shape does not add any detail of determination. The same level of determination can be achieved with a simple stickermod - or a Birckermod, as shown here.

The original Fisher Cube has the cube shape rotated 45° against the vertical axis. Each of the faces around has a single color. This leads to the situation of four centers in the middle of the vertical edges, and four edge pieces around being face centers. The four centers around now have to be oriented properly, because they show the colors of the two adjacent faces. The orientation of the four edge pieces around is not determined, because they only have one color and a symmetric shape.

The Modification

The Brickermod Non-Fishered Fisher Cube only has the color transitions rotated at 45°. This means that each face has two colors, and there is only one color at both sides of the vertical edges. The level of determination is exactly the same as for the original Fisher Cube, but the Non-Fishered version does not change its shape.

Parts List

The colors mentioned in the parts list are the generic color names, and do not represent the exact colors used in this "Candy" color theme.

Brickermod: Eight Colors Cube - Cubic Corner Turning Octahedron

Brickermod Eight Colors Cube
Left: Corner Turning Octahedron - Right: Brickermod Eight Colors Cube

Initial build: 2023-07-30

This Brickermod is based on the layout of a Corner Turning Octahedron. As Stickermod, this concept is also known as "Eight Colors Cube". The color transitions are the same as for the octahedron, but projected onto a cubic surface. Just as with the Octahedron, all corner pieces have a single color, and no determined orientation. Each center piece has four colors, where the orientation has to be matched against the edge pieces.

The Modification

The Corner Turning Octahedron was suggested in 1981 by Josef Trajber, and is therefore known as "Trajber's Octahedron". For the Cubic Brickermod, the eight faces of the Octahedron correspond to the eight Octants of a cube. Each cube face is split into four segments, three segments around each corner share the same color.

For the Brickermod, each segment requires one 1×1 Tile, two 1×2 Tiles, and one 2×2 Tile. A total of tree 1×1, six 1×2, and three 2×2 Tiles of each of the eight different colors are needed.

The color layout is Red, Green, Blue, Yellow clockwise around one vertex, and Orange, Light Green, Light Blue and White opposite of these.

Parts List

The choice of colors is based on the Corner Turning Octahedron shown in the photo. The color names given here are generic names. It is up to you to pick appropriate distinct colors based on your supply of bricks.

Brickermod: Redmill Cube

Brickermod Redmill Cube
Left: Stickermod Redmill Cube - Right: Brickermod Redmill Cube

Initial build: 2023-07-15

The distribution of four colors on twelve half-faces was suggested by Peter Redmill. The design principle was mentioned briefly in David Singmaster's Cubic Circular  » Issue 3 & 4, page 10  (via  » Jaap's Puzzle Page  ).

The Modification

The setup is to use only four colors, but distributed on twelve half-faces. The colors are arranged so that no same colors meet along an edge. Each center has two colors, where all combinations differ, and the orientation of the centers has to be matched with the colors of the halves.

The Redmill Cube is fully determined with only one solution. However, there is a nasty parity issue, where you can end up with a single twisted corner.

Brickermod: Four Colors Cube, V1

Brickermod Four Colors Cube
Left: Four Colors Cube - Right: Brickermod Four Colors Cube

Initial build: 2023-08-04

The "Four Colors Cube" is a stickermod, where each face is split into two segments across a face diagonal. Three faces around a corner have the same colors, a total of four colors are necessary.

The modification is similar to a Pyramorphix or Mastermorphix, but the Cubic version is less determined than the Tetrahedral variants. The lack of determination is due to the symmetric shape of the edge pieces, none of the twelve edge pieces has a determined orientation.

There are different color combinations used for these Four Colors Cubes. This is a variant with Black Body and White as one of the four colors.

The Brickermod

The Brickermod can be built using so-called "Modified 2×2 Tile, Triangular". Unfortunately, this type of tile is only availble in a limited amount of colors. This means that you need to pick colors where both types of tiles, triangular and square are available.

Brickermod: Four Colors Cube "From Hell"

Brickermod Four Colors Cube From Hell
Four Colors Cube "From Hell" - Left: Main View, Right: Opposite View

Initial build: 2023-08-26

This is a design of a "Four Colors Cube" that is still fully determined. The "classic" Four Colors Cube introduces three types of problem: Four of the corner pieces have no orientation. Then, there are four groups of three identical edge pieces. Within each group, the placement of the edge pieces is not determined. On top of that, none of the edge pieces has a determined orientation.

You can improve the level of determination by changing the distribution of the four colors. The "classic" layout uses the same color around four of the corner pieces. If you use different colors around such a corner piece, and place the fourth color on the other halves of the ajecent faces, the level of determination is significantly higher. Only six pairs of identical edge pieces are present.

To make the edge pieces fully determined, you have to get more than two colors on the edge pieces. Each of the four corner segments where three colors meet need to be re-arranged. A segment is considered as three rings, and the colors of the three rings have to be permuted. This can be done by moving the colors clockwise, for example.

After my first solve of the cube, I gave it the name "From Hell", because the solve is a lot harder than that of a Tartan Cube.

Brickermod: Non-Twisted Twisted Cube

Brickermod Non-Twisted Cube
Left: Twisted Cube - Right: Non-Twisted Twisted Cube

Initial build: 2023-08-04

The "Twisted Cube" was originally released as "Eitan's Twist", named after its inventor Eitan Cher. The faces of a regular 3×3×3 cube are merged between face diagonals, erasing the edge line inbetween. This creates the illusion of a cube where opposite faces are twisted 90° against each other.

The Modification

Actually, the Twisted Cube only moves the color transitions of the faces around from the edge lines to the face diagonals. This can be implemented as flat Brickermod by using 2×2 triangular tiles, which are essentially 2×2 tiles cut in half along a diagonal.

The shape of the Twisted Cube does not add any determination. The shape even helps when placing the edge pieces in the upper and lower layers. For the flat version, the colors of the corner pieces have to be taken into account to determine the slant direction. The orientation of four edge pieces in the middle layer is not determined in both variants, because the edge piece shape of the Shapemod is symmetric.

This means that the Brickermod is even a little bit harder to solve than the original Shapemod.

Brickermod: Tartan Dots Cube

Brickermod Tartan Dots Cube
Left: Stickermod Tartan Dots Cube - Right: Brickermod Tartan Dots Cube

Initial build: 2023-07-01

The original "Tartan Cube" was suggested by Dan Hoey and Jim Saxe back in 1981. The posting in the "Cube Lovers" group is still available as copy:  » Four colors suffice . The design principle was also mentioned briefly in David Singmaster's Cubic Circular  » Issue 3 & 4, page 10  (via  » Jaap's Puzzle Page  ).

There are only four colors used in total, but on four squares on each cubie. Four colors create a total of six unique cyclic arrangements, so in spite of each cubie face showing the same four colors, the sequence of these colors indicates placement and orientation. The center pieces have to be oriented correctly as well, so a Tartan Cube is also a "Super Cube".

With my "Tartan Dots" Stickermod, I used circular dots instead of squares, and I distrubuted the dots equally across each cube face, so that the dots create a regular 6x6 dot grid, to make the cube look even more disturbing.

For a "Brickermod Tartan Cube", you need a total of 216 1x1 Round Tiles, 54 of each of the four colors. In my example, Red, Green, Blue and Yellow were used on a White Body.

The Brickermod does not have the dots equally distributed across a face, but it is still very hard to solve, while the look is much more spectacular than the flat Stickermod.

Instead of 1x1 Round Tiles (#98138), you could also use 1x1 Square Tiles (#3070) to imitate the original Tartan Cube design, or use 1x1 Quarter Tiles (#25269) to form a 2x2 circle on each cubie face.

As Stickermod, I only have the "Tartan Dots Cube" using circular dots on a White Body. Brickermod was the perfect way to finally try the original concept with square color patches. The gap/twist with the square 1x1 tiles is really annoying, but the result is good enough to enjoy it.

For more information, see the  Tartan Dots  concept above.

Initial build: 2023-07-05

This is my first "genuine" Brickermod design. Maybe I try it as a Stickermod some time later...

The photo shows the Red Dots Cube in "Checkerboard" Pattern. Although the scheme is simple, it is very confusing during the solve.

The square 1x1 tiles are hard to get aligned, because they can rotate freely around the studs as fas ar the adjacent tiles allow. Maybe I get more different tiles, so I can use 1×2 tiles and 2×2 L shaped tiles to minimize the possibility of twists.

Do you think I could apply for a Red Dot Award with that design?

Brickermod: Two Colors, Three Patterns

Brickermod 2 Colors, 3 Patterns
Brickermod Two Colors, Three Patterns

Initial build: 2023-08-23

This is a fully determined cube, including center pieces and core orientation. There are two colors and three patterns used. The three patterns are solid, orthogonal stripes and diagonal stripes.

The Scheme

The solid colors are used for opposite faces. To set the center orientation, a small square of opposite color is used at an offset position.

For the patterns around, the same type of pattern is used on adjacent faces. If the patterns would be used on opposite faces around, the orientation of the core would not be determined. This is due to the fact that the center pieces can be transformed into the opposite pattern variant simply by rotation.

One pair of faces uses horizontal and vertical stripes, the other pair used diagonal stripes of opposite orientation.
